Kung Fu Chris (Chris Arenas) is a Los Angeles-based DJ, producer, whose career spans more than two decades of dance floors, record digging, and underground music culture. His story begins in San Francisco, where the city’s thriving 1990s music scene sparked an obsession with records that never let go. He became a fixture of the Bay Area nightlife, holding down sets at Madrone Art Bar and building community alongside DJ MAKossa through beloved parties Fo Sho Fridays, Sabado Soul, and Funky Rewind: a weekly at The Skylark that drew selectors from across the region and beyond. Venues like Monarch, Elbo Room, and Public Works became regular stops. Spaces where the relationship between music and the room is taken seriously, alongside appearances at legacy parties Sweater Funk and Afrolicious. A stretch in New Orleans deepened his roots further. Residencies at Hi-Ho Lounge, The Saint, and One Eyed Jacks put him in front of rooms that demand something real. His sound has since traveled to New York City, Washington D.C., Austin, and Costa Rica. In 2015, a debut release under his production project Computa Games brought him to Los Angeles for a performance at the legendary Funkmosphere, and the city held on to him. He became a recurring presence there, leading to his collaboration with DJ Randy Watson. That connection gave rise to MidNite Disco, a party, a radio show, and a shared language between two selectors who approach music the same way: with care, curiosity, and a deep respect for the music. As a producer, Chris has released music through projects Close Corners and Computa Games. As half of MidNite Disco, he co-hosts a bi-weekly radio show on 99.1 KLBP Long Beach and continues to play shows across Los Angeles at venues such as Townhouse Venice, Clifton’s Republic, Soho Warehouse, Apotheke, and Gold Line. Whether unearthing rare international grooves or dropping modern funk heaters, Kung Fu Chris continues to bridge timeless records, new discoveries, and a genuine love for sharing music.
